He wrote and illustrated a dozen children&#8217;s books on his own, in addition to illustrating sixty others, thirty of them written by his wife Dorothy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"197\" height=\"289\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Boldly-Nils-Hogner.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1604\"\/><figcaption><em>Boldly <\/em>by Nils Hogner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Boldy<\/em>, created by Hogner in 1953, is the story of a timid little puppy who is laughed at by his littermates for not living up to his name. But one day Boldy faces down a fox and discovers that a big heart can live in a small body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hogner captures Boldy\u2019s timidity perfectly on the cover, setting the stage for the captivating illustration of Boldy\u2019s triumphant reunion with his deeply impressed family after the fox encounter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"120\" height=\"159\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Nils-Hogner.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1605\"\/><figcaption>Nils Hogner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nils Hogner and his wife Dorothy lived at Hemlock Hill Farm in Litchfield. Hogner was known for his murals, and contributed posters for local horse shows. Many of Hogner\u2019s children\u2019s books are about horses, among them<em> Dynamite the Wild Stallion<\/em> and <em>The Nosy Colt<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"272\" height=\"244\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Puppies-Nil-Hogner.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1606\"\/><figcaption>Art from <em>Boldly <\/em>by Nils Hogner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hogner grew up in Massachusetts, studied art in Boston, and traveled to the Southwest to begin his painting career. He met and married Dorothy while he was a professor at the University of New Mexico.
