{"id":218,"date":"2010-08-31T14:45:13","date_gmt":"2010-08-31T18:45:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org\/blog\/?p=218"},"modified":"2016-12-08T16:33:47","modified_gmt":"2016-12-08T20:33:47","slug":"new-acquisition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org\/?p=218","title":{"rendered":"New Acquisition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-217\" src=\"http:\/\/www.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Barbert-sketch-of-View-from-Chestnut-hill.jpg\" alt=\"Barbert sketch of View from Chestnut hill\" width=\"750\" height=\"548\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This Litchfield Historical Society is pleased to announce the acquisition of the original sketch of the South East View from Chestnut Hill by John Warner Barber.<\/p>\n<p>The drawing was discovered in an antique shop in Stonington, CT by a friend of the museum.\u00a0 The staff quickly jumped into action and contacted the antique shop owner.\u00a0 He was thrilled the museum was interested and the transaction was quickly finalized.<\/p>\n<p>John Warner Barber (1798-1885) was born in East Windsor, CT.\u00a0 He learned the art of printmaking and opened his own business in New Haven, CT.\u00a0 He is most noted for his engravings of Connecticut towns.\u00a0 These were compiled into a book by Barber in 1837\u00a0 called <em>Connecticut Historical Collections. <\/em>The book sold 7,000 copies in its first year even though it cost three dollars, then an average weeks pay.<\/p>\n<p>Barber started with rough pencil sketches and developed them into more detailed wash drawings. He then transferred the drawings directly to small blocks of boxwood on which he engraved the designs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-219\" src=\"http:\/\/www.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/View-from-Chestnut-Hill-2.jpg\" alt=\"View from Chestnut Hill (2)\" width=\"1346\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Above is the published engraving of his original pencil drawing.\u00a0\u00a0 It is often thought Barber inserted himself into his prints.\u00a0 The gentleman in the foreground of the completed print is thought to be Barber.<\/p>\n<p>The Litchfield Historical Society is thrilled to add this rare piece of material culture to the museum&#8217;s permanent collection.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This Litchfield Historical Society is pleased to announce the acquisition of the original sketch of the South East View from Chestnut Hill by John Warner Barber.
