{"id":5,"date":"2009-05-13T11:01:13","date_gmt":"2009-05-13T15:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org\/blog\/?p=5"},"modified":"2016-12-08T15:55:36","modified_gmt":"2016-12-08T19:55:36","slug":"miss-wiggins-attic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org\/?p=5","title":{"rendered":"Miss Wiggin&#8217;s Attic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Bookman Old Style','serif';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Charlotte Monroe Wiggin<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3\" style=\"width: 177px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3 \" style=\"border: black 2px solid;\" title=\"wiggin_0001\" src=\"http:\/\/www.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/wiggin_0001-167x300.jpg\" alt=\"Charlotte Wiggin\" width=\"167\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charlotte Wiggin<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">Those of you who remember when the Society\u2019s research library was on the top floor may recall this brass plaque on the wall at the stair landing:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: 'Bookman Old Style','serif';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Charlotte Monroe Wiggin<br \/>\n1886-1974<br \/>\nCurator for 18 years<br \/>\nWithout her dedication and interest in collecting objects and papers of historical value<br \/>\nthis museum would not have grown to its present stature<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Bookman Old Style','serif';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Bookman Old Style','serif';\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Miss Wiggin, as she was known to all, was the society\u2019s curator from 1949 through her retirement in 1967.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>And during those years the museum and library truly were \u201cMiss Wiggin\u2019s Attic.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The early years of the twentieth century were a time of tremendous growth for the Society.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>These were the years that Society\u2019s earliest supporters, most notably Emily Noyes Vanderpoel and Mary Perkins Quincy tirelessly collected objects and papers for the museum and library.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Miss Wiggin took on the task of more formally organizing and cataloguing this vast collection.
