To join in the celebration, we will be posting poems from the Historical Society&#8217;s collections.<\/p>\n<p>Our first selection is from a young student from Litchfield&#8217;s Spring Hill School named Peter Seeger.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the same <a title=\"seeger\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/americanmasters\/episodes\/pete-seeger\/the-power-of-song\/50\/http:\/\/\">Peter Seeger<\/a> who later became a renowned folk singer and activist was once a boy who composed delightful poems for his school&#8217;s literary magazine.<\/p>\n<p>The Spring Hill School was founded in 1926 by Dorothy Bull and Mabel Spinney, who modeled the school on the ideals of progressive education.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_513\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/O_Spring-Hill-School.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-513\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-513\" src=\"http:\/\/www.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/O_Spring-Hill-School.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-513\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students feed chickens at the Spring Hill School<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Before &#8220;Where Have All the Flowers Gone?&#8221; there was &#8220;Cheer-Up Rhyme for a Misty Day,&#8221; published in <em>Wit and Wisdom<\/em>, Spring Hill&#8217;s Upper School literary publication, in June of 1932.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cheer-Up Rhyme for a Misty Day<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Tis a very foggy day,<br \/>\nIn the misty, foggy way,<br \/>\nAnd I hope that it will clear up very soon;<br \/>\nFor the hillside&#8217;s all blurred out,<br \/>\nBy this dampish white about,<br \/>\nAnd all last week I hardly ever saw the moon.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s so wet and damp and &#8220;mucky,&#8221;<br \/>\nThat one doesn&#8217;t feel so lucky,<br \/>\nIf on slips and falls down in an &#8220;ooky&#8221; pond.<br \/>\nBut, when I settle down and read,<br \/>\nHaving cared for every need,<br \/>\nI feel that I should smile and say,<br \/>\n&#8220;Be darned&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>April is National Poetry Month!
